Depart at first light in an open-top Land Cruiser with your dedicated naturalist guide — a local who has walked these paths for decades. Yala and the adjacent Bundala wetlands together host over 215 resident and migratory species. Join our resident ornithologist on a guided walk through scrub, grassland and lagoon edge at dawn. Spot the Sri Lanka junglefowl, blue-tailed bee-eater, painted stork, and if fortune allows — the elusive Indian pitta. Binoculars and a bird log are provided.
Hidden within the national park itself, Sithulpawwa is a 2,000-year-old Buddhist rock temple that once housed 12,000 monks. Carved into a granite inselberg rising 400 feet from the jungle, the site contains 60 caves adorned with ancient frescoes and inscriptions. Your guide will explain the monastery's layered history while troops of grey langurs provide an irreverent commentary from the trees.
As the afternoon game drive winds down, your vehicle detours to the ancient fishing hamlet of Kirinda — where a white Buddhist stupa crowns a sea-cliff and the Indian Ocean ignites in orange and violet at dusk. Yala National Park shelters one of the most impressive concentrations of megafauna in South Asia. These are the five species that define the experience — though the jungle invariably offers more than you expect.
The island's apex predator and the park's undisputed icon. Yala holds the world's highest density of wild leopards — approximately one per square kilometre. Unlike their mainland counterparts who must compete with tigers and lions, Sri Lankan leopards have evolved to be the top predator: bolder, more diurnal, and far more likely to be seen lounging on a branch in full daylight. Block I offers the best sightings near the Menik Ganga waterways.
Sri Lanka has the highest density of Asian elephants in the world. At Yala's waterholes and seasonal tanks, herds of up to 30 gather at dusk — mothers guiding calves through the shallows while solitary bulls patrol the margins. Encounters at the lodge's own waterhole are a daily occurrence.
The most exciting and least predictable of Yala's Big 5. Shaggy, short-sighted, and irascible, sloth bears are most visible during the palu fruit season (May–June) when they congregate beneath fruiting trees in remarkable numbers. A sighting on foot is considered the holy grail of Sri Lankan wildlife encounters.
Ancient and armoured, mugger crocodiles up to 4 metres long haul out on the sun-baked mud banks of Yala's lagoons and irrigation tanks, sometimes in groups of twenty or more. A cold-blooded ambush predator whose lineage predates the Himalayas — sitting perfectly still while the world moves around them.
One of the world's most powerful land animals, wild buffalo at Yala are a far cry from their domestic cousins. Bulls can weigh over 1,000 kg and have been recorded driving leopards from fresh kills. They wallow in the park's seasonal ponds throughout the year, turning the water a rich terracotta as they roll and submerge.
Peak leopard season runs February–July. Block I partially closes in September.
Named for the natural waterhole it overlooks — where animals arrive throughout the night to drink — The Waterhole is our open-air restaurant built around the trunk of a centuries-old weera tree. Every dish draws from the deep culinary heritage of Sri Lanka's southern coast, reinterpreted with produce grown in our own kitchen garden and caught by Kirinda fishermen that morning.
